Join us as we delve into Reza’s career journey, his unique perspectives, and practical tips for enhancing livestock performance.

What is your educational background, and how has it prepared you for your career in animal nutrition?

I come from an academic background, starting with a Bachelor of Science in Animal Sciences from Ferdowsi University of Mashhad in Iran. I continued my studies at Ferdowsi University with a Master of Science in Animal Nutrition. Later, I moved to Australia, where I completed my PhD in Ruminant Nutrition at the University of New England, NSW, in 2008. My doctoral studies provided me with specialised knowledge in ruminant digestion, particularly in sheep.

What inspired you to pursue a career in animal nutrition?

During my undergraduate studies, I spent a significant amount of time on farms, researching and understanding animal digestion, feed composition, and nutrition. My master’s studies deepened my interest as I analysed feed components and investigated how nutrition impacts performance, health, and productivity in dairy cattle. Seeing how proper nutrition can improve animal welfare and farm profits inspired me to make a difference in the industry. This passion motivates me to create effective and sustainable feeding solutions that help both animals and farmers.

What does your role entail at Riverina Stockfeeds?

As a Senior Nutritionist, it’s my role to design and develop animal feed formulations that meet the nutritional requirements of our customers. When compiling a custom diet, the first step is realising the situation at the customer’s farm which is why we visit in person. We’re looking at factors such as animal breed, age of the animal, what products have been used before, the farmer’s goals, affordability of ingredients and more. Based on that information I put together the optimal ingredients to ensure the animals get the right nutrition while being cost-effective. I also provide ongoing support and adjustments as needed to ensure the diet continues to meet the farm’s evolving needs.

How do you stay updated with the latest advancements in animal nutrition research?

Coming from an academic background, I strive to stay current with the latest research and innovation in the animal nutrition industry. Twenty years ago, the field was relatively simple, focusing on a few key ingredients. Today, there are hundreds of options and staying updated is crucial. I achieve this by reading scientific journals, attending conferences, and listening to industry interviews. Furthermore, I actively participate in webinars and training sessions offered by reputable organisations, which often provide in-depth knowledge about specific products and nutritional strategies. I also maintain a strong network within the industry and academia, exchanging ideas and knowledge with colleagues to broaden my understanding. By combining these methods, I ensure that my advice to customers is not only scientifically sound but also aligned with the latest innovations and industry best practices.

What interesting developments have you observed in the animal nutrition industry?

One of the most fascinating advancements is the exploration of alternative protein sources, such as insect-based proteins derived from Black Soldier Fly larvae. This sustainable protein source has significant potential for reducing environmental impact and could become a practical option for farmers in the future.

Another exciting development is the integration of AI technology into feed formulation and livestock monitoring. These technologies are advancing rapidly, and it’s intriguing to see how they’ll shape the future of the animal nutrition industry. Recent findings indicate that AI-powered predictive models can optimise feed formulations by analysing animal performance data, environmental conditions, and ingredient availability in real time, leading to cost-effective and precise nutrition strategies. Additionally, AI is being used to monitor animal behaviour and health through wearable sensors, providing early detection of issues such as illness or stress, which can significantly improve animal welfare and productivity.

What signs can farmers look for to determine if their animals are receiving proper nutrition?

Farmers concerned about their animals’ nutrition should monitor several key indicators. Animals that are shy eaters, have reduced feed intake, or exhibit production issues may not be receiving adequate nutrition. Dairy farmers can also look at somatic cell counts in their milk reports for signs of nutritional imbalance. Keeping an eye on feed delivery and overall animal health can help identify and address issues early. Additionally, monitoring body condition scores and growth rates can provide valuable insight into whether the animals are meeting their nutritional needs.

What is your process for creating a custom feed solution for a customer?

The process begins with an on-farm visit. Seeing the customer’s operation firsthand allows me to gather critical data, such as the animals’ breed and age, current diet, environmental factors, and the farmer’s goals. Using this information, I formulate a custom feed mix that ensures optimal nutrition while remaining cost-effective. I also consider any specific challenges the farmer might face, such as ingredient availability, seasonal variations, or health concerns, to create a solution that’s practical and sustainable.

What has been the most rewarding aspect of being a Riverina nutritionist?

One of the most rewarding aspects is the personal connection that is developed with farmers during on-farm visits. Meeting farmers face-to-face over a cup of tea allows me to understand the goals they want to achieve and the challenges they face. Engaging with the customers in person reflects our commitment to quality and consistent service that has been relied upon since 1927. It’s also rewarding to witness the positive effects of the feed solutions we offer, knowing they play a key role in enhancing animal health and boosting farm productivity.

What is a memorable moment you’ve experienced as a Riverina nutritionist?

One memorable experience was visiting a dairy farm in NSW where the farmer was struggling with low milk production. After assessing the situation, I developed a custom feeding program tailored to his herd. Five weeks later, the farmer reported improved herd health, increased milk production, and a level of satisfaction he hadn’t felt in years. Helping Australian farmers achieve their goals through nutrition is incredibly fulfilling.
