From Mill Floor to Management: Josh Wells's Career at Riverina Stockfeeds

Stepping onto the mill floor at Riverina Stockfeeds’ Casino Feed Mill nearly a decade ago marked the beginning of Josh Wells’ rewarding career, one that has seen him work in every role before becoming Branch Manager.

Josh’s journey with Riverina Stockfeeds began in September 2016 when he joined the production team as a mill worker, helping to create the high-quality stock feed the company has been known for since 1927.

“My time on the mill floor gave me firsthand insight into the dedication and hard work required to produce the excellent feed that supports local farmers,” he says.

“After working on the mill floor for some time, an opportunity arose to become a shift supervisor, which gave me valuable insight into what it takes to lead a team.”

Eager to expand his skills, Josh transitioned from the mill floor to administration, gaining exposure to another critical aspect of the business.

“Moving into admin gave me a more public-facing role, allowing me to get to know our customers—many of whom I had previously made feed for,” he says.

Two years later, Josh obtained his truck license, enabling him to assist the delivery drivers and ensure customers received their feed on time.

“While working in admin introduced me to our customers, helping out on the trucks allowed me to meet them face to face with a handshake,” Josh says.

In 2021, long-term Territory Sales Manager Guy Porter retired after 25 years with the company, marking the end of an era—but also the beginning of a new chapter as Josh stepped into the sales team.

“When I joined the sales team, it was a new role with new challenges, but having built strong relationships with our customers through my time in admin and on the trucks made the transition feel natural,” Josh explains.

Throughout his career, Josh has witnessed the resilience of local farmers, particularly during challenging times brought on by major weather events in 2018, 2019, and 2022.

“In those years, local farmers and our staff faced debilitating droughts, devastating fires, and severe floods. I saw firsthand the impact these climate events had on our customers. It was heartbreaking to see so many of the farmers I had gotten to know well being hit by these disasters back-to-back,” he says.

After the retirement of former Casino Branch Manager Tony Maslen in 2023, Josh was encouraged to take the next step as the new Branch Manager—a natural progression after working in every other position since 2016.

Josh believes his experience in every role within the Casino Branch has given him a unique perspective as Branch Manager.

“Having worked in every role here has helped foster a mutual respect between myself and the team. I wouldn’t ask anything of them that I know isn’t achievable or that I haven’t done myself,” he says.

“One of the great things about working at Riverina Stockfeeds is the strong sense of teamwork. I have learned a lot from long-standing staff like our Ruminant Specialist, Glen Whitton, and Young Mill Branch Manager, Nick Hall.

“Being a Branch Manager is incredibly rewarding because no two days are the same. Every day brings a new challenge for me and the Casino team to tackle.

“If you’re looking for a fulfilling career in agriculture, I highly recommend working with Riverina Stockfeeds.”
